Democratic Confederation of Nepalese Trade Unions (DECONT)

Leadership Empowerment Training Programme for the Transport Workers' under DECONT

2-4 August 2002, Kathmandu

Background Information:

Afler the restoration of democracy in Nepal in 1990, one of the major boomed economic sector is transport and its! related services. The construction of new roads, infrastructure development projects, increased economic activities in cities, population growth and liberal economic policies in this period has developed the transport sector as huge industry. The industry is ultimately providing jobs to hundreds of thousand of people. With the increment in the number of vehicle, the creation of employment opportunity is increasing more than threefold in comparison to the vehicles increased in the forms of driver, conductor, helper, auto mechanics and their helpers, spare parts sellers, petrol pump workers aiid many more.

However, the NLFS 9 8/99 showed the transport related workers as only 197,00 but in reality it could be more than threefold of this numbers. With the development in the field of transport industry and increment in the employment opportunities the problems related with concerned workers are also increasing in the same ratio. The majority of workers involved in this sector are facing severe exploitation. They are less paid and have to work for long hour. The most vulnerable are the helpers who are engaged in vehicle, auto workshop etc. Although, the trade union is not new for the transport workers but they are not well covered by the unions.
